Прозаик, публицист, представитель "чикагской школы" писателей-урбанистов. Родился в семье иммигрантов из Ирландии, в 1929 окончил Чикагский университет [Chicago, University of]. Служил продавцом, моряком, газетным репортером. В конце 20-х гг. дебютировал как новеллист. В его книгах много автобиографических страниц. В историю национальной литературы вошел как автор трилогии о сыне ирландского иммигранта-бедняка из Чикаго: "Юный Лониган" ["Young Lonigan"] (1932), "Ранняя зрелость Стадса Лонигана" ["The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan"] (1934) и "Судный день" ["Judgement Day"] (1935). Основной мотив трилогии - пагубное влияние окружающей человека социальной среды. За выступление в середине 30-х гг. против сталинизма был фактически отлучен от левого движения. Сквозная тема его более поздних произведений, не имевших прежнего успеха, - осознание ирландцем-католиком ценностей американского образа жизни [American way of life]. В них писатель стремился с максимальной полнотой воссоздать историю Америки, устремления ее народа. Опубликовал ряд эссе: "Судьба писательского труда в Америке" ["The Fate of Writing in America"] (1946), "Литература и мораль" ["Literature and Morality"] (1947) и др. В начале 60-х гг. принялся за многотомный цикл романов "Вселенная времени" ["A Universe of Time"], охарактеризовав его жанр как "условную панораму эпохи"
